Why is purple the colour of Lent?

GetFed posts a reflection on why purple is the colour of Lent

"In our Catholic tradition, purple is the color of the seasons of penance and preparation: Advent and Lent. Priests wear a purple stole in the confessional to symbolize the penitential nature of the sacrament."
